Etymotic Etymotion Bluetooth Cable, MMCX
- I purchased the Etymotion after much deliberation between it and other bluetooth DACs (such as Fiio\'s or Quedelix\'s offerings). In the end, what I wanted was to not have a cable running down my body to a device in my pocket, but rather to have something I wear. Etymotic\'s latest earphones use an unusual MMCX cable that has an immediate right angle, so there aren\'t many options in terms of MMCX bluetooth adapters (unless you want the cable to stick straight out, which is not ideal). This leaves me with the Etymotion for my ER4SRs.Overall, the build quality is decent. It doesn\'t quite scream \"premium\" to the touch, but the body of the device is good enough. It feels better in-person than most photos make it look, which was a pleasant surprise. The cables are a little rubbery to the touch and don\'t feel incredibly durable, but are likely to be sufficient for a few years of usage provided they are handled with care. The device also uses micro-USB, which is an odd choice considering most premium devices today use USB-C.I\'m pleasantly surprised with how the Etymotion fits. The pictures (and some customer reviews) make it look like you\'ll have this big dangly box swinging around below your chin -- that\'s the wrong way to wear it. You\'re supposed to put the box behind your neck and run the cables forward, then use the clips to secure them to your shirt. This way keeps the cables managed and lets the box rest on your neck. It\'s a little tedious to take on and off, but I forget I\'m wearing it after it\'s on.My ears aren\'t trained well so I can\'t comment well on its sound quality. I don\'t have any high-end DACs or amps, but I can say that it beats my phone/computer/etc. It seems to drive the ER4SRs well. The microphone seems to be rather quiet. It might be useful in a pinch if you\'re answering a quick call, but I wouldn\'t plan on using this as a primary headset.Cable microphonics are better than the stock cable - there\'s still some, but I don\'t feel the need to loop it around my ear, which seemed near-mandatory with the stock cable. It is possible to loop it around your ear if you wear it correctly (with the box behind your head and cables running forward), which results in slightly less microphonics, but the normal wearing style is good enough. The interface seems rather primitive compared to my Shure BT2. You get simple \"Power On\", \"Power Off\", \"Connected\", and \"Bluetooth Pairing Mode\" spoken prompts. It has a sine wave beep for volume adjustment, disconnects, and other functions that is a little unpleasant but not a dealbreaker. I can\'t find any way to check battery life.It supports AptX HD, which by my understanding is transparent except in extreme cases. You will need a device that transmit AptX HD. Android phones do, but for PCs, you\'ll need to get a separate transmitter. Apple users have AAC, which by my understanding is at least near-transparency. Considering that they market this as premium gear and have an MSRP that reflects that, I\'m a little disappointed that it doesn\'t support LDAC.Value-wise, I wouldn\'t recommend it at the MSRP of $180. I purchased it from Amazon Warehouse at a great discount, so I\'m pleased with my purchase. This device lets me move around my home office easily while wearing my ER4SRs to cancel noise, and fits them just as well as the stock cable without any compromises (such as a cable running down my body, or MMCX connectors sticking out from my ears). In short, it does its expected purpose well, just be aware of what you\'re getting and make sure it fits your needs.
- Let me start by saying I absolutely LOVE my ER4XRs and have owned then for about 2 or 3 years, but owned a pair of ER4Ps for over 15 years before that. But my experience with the Etymotions had been nothing but awful. The biggest problem is the batteries in the 2 I\'ve had don\'t last long and aren\'t user replaceable. The first one I got the battery or battery controller in the headphones died after a few months of using them and then when I\'d plug it into the charger it would look like it was charging, the light would start red then switch to green, but when I\'d unplug them and try to use them 90%+ of the time they\'re turn on, pair, then within a second or two I\'d hear the voice saying they\'re powering off and then they\'d turn off. I could then plug them back into the charger and the light would be red for a long period of time before going green making me wonder if it was really charging or if the battery was defective. And then I could try them and there was about that 90%+ chance that the save thing had happened again, and then a less than 10% chance that they\'d work. And on any of the occasions where they would work they\'d last for anywhere from a couple of minutes to an hour or two, never anywhere near the original duration.I got a warranty replacement for them without hassle or issue with the return process. I just had to pay for shipping to them, but they eventually mailed me an entirely new Etymotion in a shrink wrapped retail box, just like the first pair I bought, with all new accessories (they told me not to send any accessories back with the first pair) which I took as a good sign, but shouldn\'t have. This second pair I used 3 times without issue. The first two were for only about 15 - 30 minutes each at home and the third was about 5.5 hours sitting in a recliner at my oncologist\'s office getting chemo. After my appointment I put them on the charger and when I went to use them again a couple of hours later and after the light had turned green I tried to use them and I heard the voice and they shut off immediately. There are a few other annoyances with them as well, like the range on the 2 paid I tried was pretty bad. They wouldn\'t disconnect all the way, just switch encodings and bit rate to very noticeably lower audio quality settings but it wouldn\'t ever raise them back unless I powered the headphones off and back on or turned the Bluetooth off and back on on the source (phone, computer, tablet, etc.).They\'re also a huge pain to switch audio sources on. With some devices they won\'t unpair with easily, like if they\'re paired to my Samsung Note 20 Ultra if I put the Etymotions into pairing mode they immediately repair with my phone so I have to turn the Bluetooth off on my phone if I want to pair them with something else. They also fail to pair frequently and this has happened with multiple devices (Samsung Note, Dell G7, MacBook Pro, iPad, 2 Chromebooks, & desktop), more so than most other Bluetooth devices (the only other device I have that does it as much is my car, but it handles multiple devices so you only have to pair when you buy a new phone or device, so not as bad).At this point I wish I hadn\'t bought them and just kept using adapters. I switch devices/sources frequently enough that a cable with a little USB-C adapter is much more convenient and that\'s before factoring in the breaking and exchanges, especially since the warranty is only from the purchase date for the first pair and if this keeps up I\'ll likely be left with a broken device shortly after the warranty expires and only was able to use it for a fraction of the time before that if it keeps breaking.I\'ll try and come back and update this if I have to keep replacing it, if I get one that works, or something else happens.
