iHome Docking Bedside and Home Office Amazon Echo Dot Speaker System - iAV2B

  • It does what it says it will. And just that. Most of my disappointment is with Alexa.I bought this to replace my existing alarm clock, which is failing. I thought that using Alexa with this speaker might solve some of my problems. It does and it doesn\'t. Not the fault of the speaker. My assessment of four stars is based just on the speaker. I tried to buy a new Gen 2 Echo Dot for this unit and they were no longer available, so I took one of my existing Dots and used it, and ordered a new Gen III Dot for the old Dot location. Here are the problems I have found with the speaker: 1. Time does not advance automatically at season change. You have to change it by hand. (This is simple to do and only took a few moments.) Alexa does not control the time displayed on the speaker. 2. The time control buttons are on the bottom. You must flip the unit over and hold the Dot in place to change the time. 3. The manufacturer should state in it\'s advertising if the third gen. Echo Dots work or do not work in it. 4. It is just a speaker with a clock. There are no additional controls. (This is also a plus.) 5. Relating to item 4, there is no snooze button. 6. I installed the Dot into the speaker following the instructions. (The instructions are fairly easy to follow. They are in English and not in 17 other languages.) This is not difficult to do but does take some juggling. Once up and running, I noticed a faint hum coming from the unit. Upon inspection I noticed that one of the connecting wires passed over another wire. By twisting the Dot just a bit I was able to separate the two wires and the hum disappeared. This should be mentioned in the instructions. My biggest disappointment is with Alexa. It is a plus that you can go into Alexa with a computer and select different alarms, etc. So far I have found that most of the alarms available thru Alexa are inadequate for my needs. I tend to sleep thru them. One solution is to turn up the volume. Doing so now means that Alexa is yelling at you when you try to do anything else with Alexa at this speaker. I am still trying to find the optimum volume. Another problem is that it is Alexa and you have to carry on a conversation with it. If my spouse is asleep before I go to bed and I have forgotten to set an alarm, I now have to carry on a conversation with a loud Alexa speaker, waking up my spouse, or go and turn on my computer and go in and set the alarm which takes more than a few minutes. To stop the alarm you have to say \"Alexa stop\". If you are trying to quietly get up and not disturb your spouse, carrying on a conversation with Alexa is not the best way.One plus is that you can set multiple alarms for different reasons. If you want to get up earlier, or later on certain days you can set an alarm at that time for that day and leave it on continuously. For example if you want to get up at 6:15 on Tuesdays, you can set that alarm and leave it on, and every Tuesday it will go off at 6:15. You don\'t have to remember to tell Alexa before you go to bed. I have found that on the days that I must get up I can set a second alarm to go off a few minutes latter than the first alarm. It is quite flexible. Multiple people can use the alarm functions. You do not have to have separate alarm clocks, because it is voice controlled. It also does not have to be within reach.UPDATE: Solved a couple of my Alexa problems! I found that you can say \"Alexa, snooze\" and she will give you 9 more min. Also as to volume and alarms. If you have Amazon Prime you have Amazon music. You can say \"Alexa, wake me with...\", and name one of your playlist or one of Amazons playlist. That playlist will start on time. I find that the music wakes me better than the Alexa alarms do, sometimes on the first note! Also this has allowed me to turn down the volume of the unit. Alexa is no longer yelling at me and the music still wakes me. If you intend to make your own \'Wake Me\' playlist, may I suggest Dire Straights \"Walk of Life\". Works for me.
  • I first purchased the iAV2v2 February of 2019. And I thought it was a great deal for $50. I didn’t expect the sound quality be outstanding and I got what I expected. It has a good solid sounds but wasn’t very loud. I was just hoping it would be a little louder than it was since I\'m a bit older. The dimmer on this unit didn’t go very low either (becomes in a night light in the bedroom which doesn’t really bother my wife or myself). Last month we had a power outage and for whatever reason it blew the speaker on the unit. So I looked it up to replace it and found out that the unit had gone down in price. I was curious as to why… I soon discovered the iAV2B for $60. The reviews look almost identical to the other model so I thought I’d take a chance and get this different version to see if the speaker was any better. It arrived 2 days ago & I immediately set it up and and was delighted to find out the lights dimmed considerably lower than the other unit. I then played some music and cranked up the volume to 10 and was delighted that it was noticeably louder. Sound quality is still about the same… I don’t expect this to sound like a Harman Cardin or Sonos but it does have a decent sound quality.Hope this helps with any buying decisions for others.
  • This clock/speaker is a great addition to an Echo Dot, if you happen to have one lying around like I did. The speaker doesn\'t sound as good as an Echo, but it really doesn\'t sound bad at all... a little lacking in bass, but not terribly so, and I\'m happy with it. Compared to the Dot\'s built-in speaker, well, there\'s no comparison. It\'s hugely better. The Dot fits perfectly into the top of the unit, and it responds to commands and picks up voices just as well as it did before. Operates perfectly. The look of this is very sleek, and the LED clock shining through the fabric around the sides of the unit looks really good. It feels high-end, and we\'ve received lots of compliments on it. The clock is easy to set, and it comes with a back-up battery. No frills or extra features - it\'s just a clock, and it relies on Alexa for the rest of its brains. All in all, this is very well done, and I recommend it.The only complaint I have is the USB charging port on the back. It\'s only 1 amp, so it won\'t charge your smartphone as quickly as something with more oomph. But that\'s a minor complaint. The list price seems a bit high, too, but if you can find a sale price on this, you certainly won\'t be disappointed.
  • Great purchase. It did all I wanted it to do--charger for my phone, integrated Echo Dot to the speaker, etc.. However, after 2 years, the speaker finally conked out and started making an annoying buzzing sound.
  • The first one I bought for a family member, NEW, was sent to me opened and resealed. I was so upset and felt cheated! I let my family member see what I got for his Amazon Dot before I sent it back. He WAS going to get it for Christmas until I got the USED product and decided to return and not attempt to get another...but then he said he didn’t like his Dot anymore without this. I left the room and sneakily called Amazon back and said I wanted exchange instead...got it, luckily NEW this time...wrapped it up...hid deep under the tree.. He was SO HAPPY he got this! He loves his Dot again too. :)
