SENNHEISER HD 660 S - HiRes Audiophile Open Back Headphone
- The HD 660 S is my first Sennheiser cans in years since I made the decision to go untethered and went over to the Bluetooth side with Bose, then to Sony. In truth with age and personal mileage my hearing ain\'t what it use to be, so the transition from my old HD 650 and HD 800 wasn\'t as hard as it might\'ve been if I were 20 or 30 years younger with far better hearing. Fact is, I was originally thinking of buying Sony\'s latest XM series headphones, the WH-1000XM5, to update from the XM3 that I\'ve been using for the past couple of years. Then I came across the HD 660 S, and a wave of nostalgia and the remembrance of the sweet airy Sennheiser sound came out of the depths of my noggin. Good times, those were. Great, actually. So then it hit: enough with the Sony headphones; it was only puny $50 off anyways. Time to pony up for a new set of Sennheiser cans.I suppose I could\'ve saved some money and dug out my older sets (there are a couple of HD 600 sets as well), but those all have lots of mileage and hours on them and I kind of wanted something new to experience. Besides, 660 is a higher number than 650, right? Okay, so it\'s well below 800 but this is MY reasoning for splurging on my latest set of cans, and I can use whatever illogical justification I want. So there.Since arriving from Amazon, I\'ve been using the 660 S for about a week now, running it through my Denon receiver a bit, then dongled to my S22 Ultra. In general I\'ve been pleased with its sound right out of the box despite there being no burn-in time. At my age and to subjecting myself to years of insanely loud cars and the hobby of target shooting with both pistol and rifle, I can\'t really hear much above 10khz anymore. But nonetheless the impact of using a sublime open-back set of cans after these past years of almost exclusively using closed noise-cancelling headsets was eye...er, ear-opening.It\'s wonderful to experience such a dynamic and expansive soundstage again, something you just can\'t really experience with closed-back headphones, no matter how good they are. These Sennheiser cans sound truly magnificent. The nuance and detail is there in spades, much like I remember my old Sennheisers performing. While I need to pull out my older cans to confirm, the 660 S seem to have a bit more warmth than what I remembered with my older units when they were right out of the box during their day. Well-recorded music is where the 660 S really shows its stuff, but one could say that about any Sennheiser open design (and most open back designs in general). On the audio side, so far I\'m more than pleased with this set. Also drawing my praise is its wear comfort; in this aspect the 660 S provides a slightly more comfortable, long duration listening experience compared to my 600s and 650.However not all is perfect. The overall build and material quality feels cheaper and generally chintzier than what I remember of my old HD 600 and 650 units. The 660 S like its predecessors loves and needs plenty of power in order to drive properly. A decent spec headphone amp I think is a must in order to get the most out of these cans. In relatively short order I came to the this realization, so now I have to budget more money for that somewhat unanticipated though not entirely unexpected expense. But despite those things I\'m so far quite happy with the 660 S. As I write this it\'s being discounted here on the site even more than the already well-discounted price that I paid, all thanks to the early start on 2022\'s Black Friday sales. At the current price the 660 S is a real steal, despite its few flaws. Definitely a solid 5-star purchase.
