Phiaton Chord MS 530 M-Series Wireless & Active Noise Cancelling Headphones with Microphone
- I bought this headset because I wanted the following features:- noise-cancelling (my office is very noisy, and I travel very often by plane)- Bluetooth (to avoid messing with cables)- microphone (to use it for phone calls)- ability to function without power (so that you can still use it as a normal headset if the battery runs out)- comfortable (to wear it for extended periods of time, e.g. 12 hours flight!)I used to have a Parrot Zik, so I\'m comparing the Chord MS 530 to it.Let\'s see how it fares for each feature.1. Noise cancellationIt does an OK job. It\'s not exactly a closed headset (it doesn\'t cup around the ear, so there is less isolation). However, sometimes, when used purely to cancel background noise (without playing music), some weird low freq feedback loop will happen, and you will hear a kind of \"WOMF-WOMF-WOMF-WOMF\" which immediately becomes very uncomfortable (and makes you feel much better as soon as you remove the headset from your ears). Other reviewers mentioned this, so I\'m not sure if this is a defect of my model or if all headsets have this issue. Since I often use it in planes to soften the engine noise (without music), that one is a huge showstopper.2. BluetoothIt works. I don\'t know exactly what the \"dual device\" thing means; if it\'s supposed to be \"two devices connected at the same time\" (e.g. my phone and my computer) then it doesn\'t work, though.3. MicrophoneWhen used as a Bluetooth headset, it did an OK job. However, I often use my headset to deliver webinars and other online presentations, and in that case, I plug it (to avoid being disconnected if the battery runs out or if I get Bluetooth issues in the middle of the presentation). As it happens, when you plug the headset, instead of using the microphones of the headset, it\'s using a microphone embedded in the cable. As a result, when I use the cable, I sometimes have to keep it closer to my mouth, otherwise people say that my voice is not loud enough; and I also have to be careful about not letting it brush on my shirt, because it makes annoying noises for the listeners.4. Using it without batteryThat works just fine. On that front, it is actually better than the Zik, because you can turn Bluetooth and Noise-Cancellation on and off independently. I.e. in a plane I can turn on only Noise-Cancellation if I want to; and when in a quiet environment I can turn on only Bluetooth if I want to.5. ComfortableIn my experience, it had a tendency to fall off a bit, especially when using it in a plane. However, because of the noise cancellation issue, I have never kept it on my head for extended periods of time, so I can\'t really compare here. That\'s unfortunate because that was one of my issues with the Zik (after 4-6 hours it gets not-so-comfortable).Other things:- the Zik comes with an iPhone/Android app that lets you check battery level and do some (IMHO useless) customizations; to be fair, at first, I hated this app (I was wondering why they couldn\'t just have a simple widget showing the charge level, instead of that bloated app?) but on the Chord I have no way to check the charge level (other than a complex key sequence that I can never remember without checking the manual!) so the app is not that bad after all;- the Zik comes with really easy controls: the right ear cover is a touchpad, so you swipe across it to adjust volume, pause, skip tracks; on the Chord, you just have one knob, and you do short presses to tweak volume, and long presses to skip tracks; I often fumbled, and also sometimes it would remain stuck in a position (e.g. when I want to lower the volume, it would remain stuck, and instead of lowering the volume it would loop back to the current track)- the Zik has a really nice feature: it detects when you take it off, and pauses the music; sounds like something useless at first, but when you switch to something that doesn\'t do that, you miss it a lot (e.g. someone wants to talk to me, I have to fumble to the pause button, take off the headset, etc)- the Chord comes with an airplane adapter, to use it in those old planes with the special dual-jack connections; that\'s nice, because I ended up buying one for the Zik;- on the Chord, the micro-USB connector (for battery charge) and the jack connector are covered with little flaps, while on the Zik, there is no cover at all; the flaps might prevent dust from getting in, but in my experience, they are rather messy and frustrating when you want to plug the thing.I haven\'t done a scientific test on battery life, but the Chord seems to fare better (even if it might be because I use it less since I\'m less happy with it).
- These may just be the best wireless noise canceling headphones you can buy. However whether you love or hate them depends almost entirely on the size and shape of your ears.Because these are on-ear headphones, instead of the over-ear headphones like many of the competitors, they will press strongly onto your ears.If you have large ears that stick out these will not only be uncomfortable to wear but will have a terrible seal giving you a terrible audio experience; The noise cancellation won\'t do squat and the music won\'t sound as good.If you have medium sized ears like I do, then wearing these will be fine for short periods, but uncomfortable for long-periods. Proper adjustment can make it better but it will take a lot of fiddling around and even then it won\'t be perfect. If you have small ears that are close to your head then these will probably be the perfect headphones for you.Pros:Outstanding battery life (like 16+ hours, I can go days without charging it)Very usable even when batteries are dead (If it dies just plug it in)Excellent sound qualityUseful buttons (There\'s a call button that lets you call Siri! + a bunch of other useful stuff)Usable microphone (not the best, but useful for phone callsGreat placement of buttons (You don\'t even need to look at them to use them)Good noise cancellation (Not perfect, probably around 5-10 db which is still useful)Amazing bluetooth range (probably like ~30-50 ft)Cons:Price. (I got it during an Amazon sale which made it worth it. I wouldn\'t pay full price for it.)Comfort. (Ouch! Hard to wear for long periods of time.)No passive-noise cancellation. (Active noise-cancellation isn\'t effective enough.)Kind of plasticky. (It\'s not the worst. It has some metal and it\'s plenty durable but there are a few parts that feel cheap). So yeah, I think the deciding factor will be comfort for most people. As useful as the features are if they aren\'t comfortable to wear then why buy it? So check your ears in the mirror and if your ears fit the size, buy it.
- I was very excited about these when I read about them and to be able to get them for 50.00 dollars off retail I felt it was a fantastic value. Upon receiving the product, my thoughts are that I am impressed with the headphones, but for whatever reason I was expecting to be more blown away by the product. Packaging was nice, very upscale and the headphones themselves really look the part and ooze quality. They come with a nice drawstring leather bag along with an audio cord with remote, and airline audio adapter. Weight is pretty good balancing quality without it feeling like you are holding a brick on your head. The earpieces are comfortable but they get pretty warm after about 20 min of use. I think after a couple of hours they would be tedious to wear. Sound quality is impressive but not amazing. Warm, balanced, but at high volumes I noticed distortion. The bluetooth is fantastic, pairs incredibly fast and I cannot tell a difference in sound quality from using bluetooth vs the wired connection. There is a delay however when trying to match up audio to video with the bluetooth, but I suppose that\'s to be expected. There are quite a few buttons and ports on the headphones, and the player controls can be problematic to control on the headphones themselves but not a big deal. Noise canceling is good, but not noticeably better than a typical Bose headset. Personally, the noise canceling makes me feel a little motion sick after a while especially if I don\'t have audio playing. The audio quality on phone calls is very good, and was told that I could clearly be heard as well.Overall, I am quite happy. Good value for the money, but better can be found for a little more coin. Definitely one of the better looking sets of headphones I have seen for sometime.
