- I would put 4 stars if not for the rattling problem. Honestly, I did not like it much from the beginning. The sound is OK, but I couldn\'t get rid of the feeling that it\'s a little bit toyish (it sounds like a better version of laptop speakers + additional bass). This effect especially manifested itself when I put this speaker on table in front of me.There are three modes: MegaBass, MegaBass+Surrounding Effect, and no effects. Last mode is unusable, subwoofer is not working (so this actually sounds like a laptop speaker). MegaBass enables subwoofer, and that mode is recommended in manual. I mostly used this regime, and sometimes Surrounding Effect when I watched movies to get clearer voice. But to tell the full truth, if you put this speaker on floor near the wall, you can get a pretty good clear sound with somewhat punchy bass, and 40W is enough to fill in my living room with loud music. :) In my opinion, it can compete with bigger non-portable speakers even from the same (or a little bit lower) price-range (especially at this sale price). But still it sounded a little bit like coming somewhere from a barrel (again, to me, not everyone would agree with me).For some reason the speaker started to produce horrible rattling sound just on the 3rd week of moderate use (I didn\'t drop it, nor listened extremely loud). Initially I thought I would replace it, but then I decided to go to BestBuy to listen again to different speakers. After listening to several speakers, I bought Sony SRS-X7. And so far I am very happy with it. Clear sound, no \"toyish/laptop/barrel\" effect, very definite and punchy bass, all music that I tried sounds great (guitars are crystal, drums sound strong, vocals clear, but I also like electronic music - that sounds really amazing, I could get my walls shaking), and that thing can definitely surpass much larger systems with dedicated subwoofer (especially if you put it on a floor near a wall). Yes, this speaker is not as loud as SRS-BTX500 (it\'s only 32W vs 40W in BTX500), but it is still more than enough for my living room. And it also has more features (like Wi-Fi connectivity).
- I\'m moving to another country and since I can\'t take my Harmon Kardon receiver and Acoustic Energy tower speakers with me, I wanted something that is portable, yet could still fill a small apartment with acceptable volume and fidelity. Yes, something that could feasibly \"replace\" my home stereo while still fitting in my suitcase. I did lots of online research and went to all of the retailers to check out the usual suspects- Bose, Jambox, Logitech, etc. and was very impressed with the Sony BTX300. I then read online reviews of the BTX500 and despite not having an opportunity to hear it live and unsure if it was worth the extra hundred bucks compared to the BTX300, I decided to pull the trigger.Boy, am I\'m glad I did. This speaker is amazing - clear, crisp highs that are still well rounded, a very clean, un-muddled base that still has power and dimension without sounding \"manufactured\" and an all in all relatively flat response. The volume is more than adequate for a small to medium-sized apartment. Set up is extremely simple and I was playing through blue tooth from my HTC Andriod in less than a minute. I listen to Jazz, pop and some classical and I find the sound of the BTX500 so much truer than the Bose or Jambox. The Logitech UE (at about the same price) comes in very close to the BTX500, but the look and design of the Sony speaker really put it over the top for me.In sum, I\'d say if you are looking for a bluetooth speaker in the mid price range ($200-$400) with a relatively flat response yet room filling volume (I don\'t know how this speaker would perform outdoors, but I have no intention of using it outside), and would like something with a sleek, classy design (maybe a little reminiscent Bose), then this speaker is for you.
- NEGATIVE SIDES:I have a Bose SoundDock II system for the iPod and I thought I could get rid of it via this Sony Bluetooth speaker. Unfortunately the quality of sound of the Sony SRSBTX500 is appreciably inferior and I might keep using the SoundDock. This was surprising given very positive reviews in terms of sound capabilitiesPOSITIVE SIDES:The Sony SRSBTX500 sounds decently good and the volume is decently high (bear in mind the point above though). It turns out that 1) streaming to it from computers / tablets / smartphones wireless is a great capability to have, 2) I do take it around in the house with me, to listen to music as I switch rooms. It is therefore useful / pleasant to have this product. The price point is also good.TO NOTE: (quality of Bluetooth connection - it is good)There is a review here saying that the Bluetooth connection would drop frequently and that it was sufficient to walk between the speakers and the transmitting device to interrupt the connection. At first I have experienced the same and I have been really frustrated, using the device was next to impossible. It turned out that it had to do with my laptop: when connected to the laptop (Lenovo X220) the connection would drop very frequently and would not pick up again. When tested with a Samsung S4, a Google Nexus 7, and a MiniMac it works flawlessly (never dropped the connection once) and at good distances / through several walls. I guess therefore the problems are related to my Lenovo laptop and this might be the case experienced by other customers.
