Tivoli Audio PAL BT - Bluetooth Portable AM/FM Radio in High Gloss White/White
- Some of the reviews on this product make it seem like this is a horrible radio. Its not. Its quite above par. Not stellar, but definitely better than most radios. I wouldn\'t say get this if the price is quite a bit more than the regular PAL, because the Bluetooth (BT) function (which is the main difference) is really annoying with iOS devices. The Good:Fully charged battery lasts quite a long time between needing to be rechargedFinish is gorgeous for being plastic, even though its not classy as all the other Tivoli radios, it holds its own quite well.It feels sturdy and has a great heftSound is excellent. I\'d say I like it better than my Model 10 stereo setupThe Bad:Power cord has a huge transformer (aka wall wart), but luckily, you don\'t have to keep this plugged in all the timeThe Ugly:Here\'s where I knock off a star. I would consider dropping it two stars, but for the price I paid, I\'m not going to be mean:The Bluetooth function with iOS 7.x devices isn\'t ready for prime-time.It took a few times to initially pair my iPhone 5S with the PAL BT. But once set up, then anytime I switch the PAL to BT mode, it does NOT automatically connect (it should if only one device has been set up with PAL).And when you try to manually connect, there\'s more than 50% chance it won\'t connect the first time. You have to keep going to iOS BT settings and clicking on BT devices to force it to connect. You are lucky if it connects second time.I\'m hoping this is a iOS issue, so that a software update could fix it. But if its is issue specific to PAL BT, then we are out of luck :(I love the radio and for the price I paid, I have no regrets. But if you are on fence between the regular PAL and the BT PAL, I suggest stay with the regular one, unless the BT version is significantly cheaper.
- So you want to but this radio? Great sound, convenient to use, batteries recharge nicely, last for the day. Simple controls, no digital frustration due to non-standard programming procedures, just dial it in! Fits almost anywhere, take it with you into the shop, kitchen windowsill, next to the shower. We have owned this radio, actually about seven or more, over the past fifteen or more years.Did I say seven or more? Well there are down sides and you need to know that. First the tuning control has worn out on all but the two new ones - three months old. The others eventually had dead spots at the frequencies we used the most. Then when tuning, loud static noise occurred between frequencies as you tuned. Then the volume control developed static when you touched or moved the control. The antenna never seemed to improved reception, AM or FM; so we left it closed at all times. But the worst thing was the battery charger receptacle in the radio; over the years that seems to break. Yes, break. The contacts either corrode or the metal contact wears down such that the charging wire needs to be rotated numerous times until you find a sweet spot whereby the charging begins - don\'t forget to periodically check back to see nothing disturbed the charging wire breaking the delicate contact. Oh yes, if you twist the charging wire frequently, the charging wire\'s plug seems to create enough metal fatigue to ruin the charger connection. We had sent several back to Tivoli only to have them - or a substitute - returned with the same problems. I wanted to talk to someone at Tivoli about the problems but could not locate their phone number.Would I buy them again - yes, we just bought two, but only on sale as we did this time. I buy them cause they fit a purpose: mobility, sound, footprint size, convenience. I know of no other that works so well. So stock up when they are on sale and realize they don\'t last all that long.
- Ordered on the 10th . . . Received on the 19th!! this \'in stock\' item simply sat in a corner until somebody decided that I had waited long enough for my item, since I did NOT pay for \'PRIME\' or expedited shipping!! Sometimes AMAZON is the sickest \'joke\' around! Other than THAT, all good and as expected. I actually SOLD this unit when first introduced by TIVOLI®, years ago. Seems the reception and tuning on THIS unit is NOT quite a good; although, far better than most. I actually bought tow (2) of these when I worked for AUDIO CRAFT® in Cleveland, Ohio, between 2002 and 2007(?). One must recall that TIVOLI is an \'off-shoot\' of a company made famous by Henry Kloss . . . Cambridge Soundworks. NO, there was no lacking in the initial design of this product . . . that is for certain. The \'original\' unit, along with the original Model One, were beyond amazing products. Even when put up against fairly high-quality component systems of the day. Just seems that the tuning, and the overall \'reception\' is not as accurate and precise as it was, years ago. So much for \"Manufactured in China.\"
