Khadas DAC amp Tone 2 Pro | Desktop Digital Analog Converter -Headphone Amplifier with USB-C/USB-C(I2S) Inputs/Outputs: 3.5mm Unbalanced / 4.4mm Balanced/RCA - MQA DECODER (Black)
- My desktop has seen numerous different DAC/AMPs over the past year or so. I’ve been auditioning various models in hopes of finding the one which best suits my needs to function as a permanent fixture in my office desk head-fi rig. I\'ve spent time a good bit of time with the Loxjie D30 (ES9068AS version), iFi Zen Dac v2, Topping EX5, Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital, AudioQuest DragonFly Red, and even an iFi NEO iDSD - to name a few.All of those devices are strong contenders when it comes to quality of sound, and most of them when it comes to diversity of function. Not a single one of them is a poor choice. A couple of my favorites were the Loxjie D30 (2021 edition), and the iFi NEO iDSD. < I probably would’ve kept the latter, but had to sell it due to particular circumstances. However, I was never fully satisfied with any of the aforementioned products. Not that I disliked them – they are all great - but there was always a hint of dissatisfaction, however subtle. Until I decided to check out the Khadas Tone2 Pro. I have hardly been able to take my hands off of it since I first opened the box and plugged it in. I\'m not going to attempt to describe the sound with audiophile cliches. I’ll just say the sound is on par with, if not better, than any desktop DAC I’ve owned. TINY footprint, HUGE sound. No problem whatsoever driving my Sennheiser HD 650s. In fact it’s a beautifully synergistic combo, IMO.Lastly, to address the volume knob/control situation. It’s not nearly the glaring issue that people are making it out to be. In fact, I think it’s totally fine, and even simple and easy once you learn it. Learning it took all of 15 minutes. Tip: watch the YouTube videos found on Khadas website (titled Tone 2 Pro - Using the Volume Knob, and Tone 2 Pro - Volume Encoder Part 2).All in all, very satisfied with this device and plan to use it for a long time.
- Then go with your gut. My concerns before purchasing were:1. The small volume knob2. Is the grip enough to stay put on my desk without moving around3. Will I memorize all these light indicators to change functions4. Does it sound that much better than everything else I already have? Here are the answers:1. The knob is okay. Turns L and R just fine. However, because this unit is tiny, if you have this at the back of your desk you\'ll have to reach all the way around to get to it. So placement is important. With bigger units that have a front facing dial or a big top dial those are much easier to reach. No major issues with the dial but just something to consider.2. The grip is not enough. It will slide around. The other issue with this is because cables can either be stiff or entering the unit from a side, under, or upper direction, then this unit can easily be moved or elevated from your cables. It did slide when I got it to be flat and I tried to change the volume, but for the most part this thing never even stays flat.3. It will take to much time and effort to memorize all these lights. Why would you even want to? I have another dac/amp on my desk that reads \"Volume\" \"Bass\" \"Treble\" \"Input\" \"Power\" etc. Monkeying around by having to learn another language and symbols is just insane. And if you get stuck then the worse part is it\'s hard to get unstuck. Without your roadmap then good luck finding your way back home. Honestly, when buying this unit my biggest question was \"how easy is this to navigate with all the weird LEDs?\" Well that question has been answered. Its not easy. Its not cute. Its not fun. I also have a FiiO K5 Pro which is about 20x this size. I\'ll happily take it over this unit simply for ease of use.4. It sounds good but you are not going to hear any major differences over any of your other quality units. If you have a Schiit stack, FiiO, Fosi Q4, JDS Atom etc. then you are going to be fine with those. This sounds good but in a blind test you will never know the difference.Even if this was your first unit I really wouldn\'t recommend it. It may turn you off to audio due to it\'s complexity. This is a novel device but I\'m not even sure who the target audience is. The biggest issue is no one wants to monkey around with all these LEDs on the dial. In addition the LEDs are under the dial. Honestly how are you supposed to see them?I switch my gain between high and low frequently depending on the headphones I\'m using. I can already anticipate this driving me crazy. This thing is way to confusing and frustrating and I cannot recommend. Here is how my star rating breaks down.Sound 5Easy of use 0Looks 3Durability 2 - With all the messing around of this little knob I don\'t see this unit being able to take it for long.
- It sounds great. Tight low end and sparkly highs.It\'s small and light, but I filled both usb-c ports and it holds down the device just fine. The LED is a semi-circle on the left side of the device, using the device on the left side of my desk makes it slightly difficult to see the light, though I can see the first little bit of the ring so I have a sense of what setting it\'s on.Using the HD 58x, Moondrop starfields, and KPH30i \"Ultra\"; the amp drives them all fine. The HD 58x need to have high gain enabled and so do the KPH30i\'s if you are doing the \"Ultra\" Grado pad mod. With a balanced cable on the 58x they get extremely loud with no distortion. It\'s got plenty of power for 150ohm headphones single ended. But if you are trying to run anything 150-300ohm, you\'ll need to go balanced. Anything over 300ohm you\'ll need to look elsewhere or get a separate amplifier.I am using the iFi iPower power supply 5v with the barrel to usb-c converter. Can\'t say I notice any difference between sound when just using usb power vs the power supply. The only reason I have it is because of the usb power issues with ryzen 5000 cpu\'s that cause frequent usb power stutters.Overall I love it, it\'s tiny and delivers a lot of power with flawless quality. This has replaced my Zen dac and the only thing I can say I miss is the Truebass feature.I have not tested the Coax or the balanced-RCA, so I\'m unaware of their performance.
