Audio-Technica ATH-DSR7BT Bluetooth Wireless Over-Ear Headphones with Pure Digital Drive
- I’ll start off by saying these headphones sound really good, and they are very comfortable to wear for a few hours, even over my glasses. I chose these primarily because I liked the sound of the ATH M50 wired headphones, so I like the Audio-Technica sound, which is what I’d call neutral and uncolored (while admitting that sound quality is totally subjective). The problems some reviewers mention are either missing from the pair I bought, or they don’t matter to me. For example, I don’t hear any hiss while playing various types of music, from rock to acoustic to classical. I suspect the hiss problem comes from the music source, rather than how the headphones reproduce the sound. The controls which irritated several reviewers are not important to me, as I set the volume control in the middle and use my source (iPhone 7 and iPad, usually) to set the volume and control the track play (skip, rewind, repeat, etc.). Using the provided charging cord is no more hassle to me than using an Apple Lightning cord. You plug the male end into the female port, and follow the instructions. Finally, I do not use these for phone calls, so microphone quality is not a factor for me.I suggest that anyone interested in paying for Bluetooth headphones in this price range should definitely audition several pair before buying anything. The factors most important to me were sound quality and comfort. In addition to music listening I use these to listen as I watch movies on my iPad. Dialogue is clear, music sounds natural and the explosions are great. These do not sound as good as wired headphones in the same price range, but they were the best sounding Bluetooth headphones that I found for the money.Having purchased a lot of stereo gear in my time, my advice is to determine your budget, read reviews from respected sources, and then try out several models in your price range before purchasing anything.Bottom line is these are great for my purposes, and I highly recommend giving them an audition.
- These are generally wonderful wireless headphones with a couple of caveats. They are comfortable and sound absolutely excellent, when playing 24 bit audio files they sound better than any other wireless headphones I have put on.Appearance: They really look great, clean charcoal and black with stainless accents, looks very sharp. 9/10Build Quality: They feel generally well put together, solid and of good quality materials. However they have a minor clicking noise noise between parts when adjusting, which is annoying and something that should not be an issue on headphones in this price range. 6/10Sound Quality: Mid ranges and the upper end is totally natural, these are damn near perfect for female vocalists, guitars, strings or intricate percussion, all of the minutia in a recording is immediately apparent. Treble never seems to get shrill even at volume. Bass is somewhat restrained, especially at lower volume. So they are not ideal for hip hop but still decent, but it punches up a bit at higher volume and is plenty for most genres. The soundstage is definitely smaller than my my wired headphones (ATH AD-900\'s, which is just huge, but those are open-back 53mm headphones designed to do just that) however for 45mm closed back cans they better than I was expecting. Soundstage is a little better than the Sony WH-1000s and much better than Bose QC35s or B&W P7s. They can definitely pump the volume too. 10/10Isolation: These are not active noise cancelling, but are closed back that seal around the ear very well and isolate outside noises more than adequately. If listening at high volume its generally a non-issue. 5/10Comfort: The fit is just a little tight for me, but I have a large head. Otherwise comfort is great for mobile headphones, they are well padded with memory foam wrapped in a very supple leather/leatherette and are very comfortable for a couple hours of continuous listening. 9/10Connectivity: Bluetooth works flawlessly from my cell phone or computer to about 40 feet away. These definitely sound better on a device that supports APTX-HD (24 bit) but still sound good on APTX (16 bit), but they definitely lose a little bit. They sound excellent on a USB connection to a computer too. Its weird not having a 3.5mm or 6.3mm cable, but it really has not an issue. 9/10Battery Life: Advertised as 15 hrs, I have been averaging about 13.5 hrs on a charge, so not quite as good as Bose, Sennheiser or B&W or Sony but these definitely sound better and are cheaper. 7/10Overall: Excellent, with a few complaints. B&W\'s feel higher quality and Sony does the noise cancelling thing with really detailed sound. But just considering the best sound quality on wireless, these are hard to beat. 9/10
- Bought them at the now reduced price to try it out and hopefully retire my old M40x\'es. Unfortunately, had to return them due to a usability issue. These sound very different from the M series headphones: the sound is clearer, brighter, has an at least perceptively wider soundstage, but flat tuned they definitely lack the bass presence that the M40x had. On the other hand, when comparing them extensively over a number of different types of music, the DSR7BT definitely sounds more refined - for me it just took quite a while to get used to the different EQ shape. Many say that the drivers are borrowed from the original MSR7, and having tried the MSR7b (new version released roughly a month ago), it definitely feels like it, although I liked the MSR7b signature better. Nevertheless, I was looking forward to listen more with these.Sadly, I had to return them. The cushions are likely made of a different material than the M40x and M50x cushions, which are meant for passive noise isolation - all slightly pitched sounds escape the headphones very easily. This was one of the main reasons, since I wanted to use them outside extensively. Another reason was that, using bluetooth, I noticed some of the highs were slightly distorted (off a Samsung Note 8 with aptX support), didn\'t happen when connected using USB (also Note 8 with USB-C OTG adapter). Could just be the way BT4.2 is - should not be a deal breaker for most. I should also mention that in a noisy environment, the built in microphone was not dealing well: the receiver would sometimes not hear my voice well even at the volume maxed out.Wireless controls are fine, usable and no particular issues with them. They do creak when you stretch them to put over your head, but that\'s pretty much it - very solid build quality.3.8/5
