FiiO FD5 Headphone Earphones High Resolution 1DD Earbuds Wired Bass Heavy with Swappable Plug 2.5mm/3.5mm/4.4mm for Smartphones/PC/Laptop/Tablet Beryllium-Coated DLC
- I typically use IEMs for travel and with a small desktop amp setup for use with a computer, streaming via Qobuz, local files, and Bandcamp\'s app. Though I already had the excellent Fiio FH7, I wanted something a bit more bass forward that would be forgiving of poorly recorded albums. The FH7 has remarkable detail and microdynamics, which is awesome for the right music, but can spoil lo-fi music or thin 80s era production (think early Depeche Mode on CD or Lloyd Cole\'s Rattlesnakes). No such issues with the FD5, which bring the needed \"body\" to music that should have a bit more low-end oomph, while still having a good amount of detail, excellent soundstage, and decent mids. I find that I like having both sets of IEMs, and switch between the two depending on what I am listening to.A few more helpful comparisons between the two:1. While FH7 has incredible sub-bass, it\'s not nearly as full bodied in terms of overall bass presence as the FD5. In my opinion, this makes the FD5 a more versatile headphone if you listen to a great variety of music. Electronic music and ambient music that would sound anemic on the FH7 sound great on the FD5.2. Acoustic music sounds good on the FD5 but, if a good quality recording, will shine on the FH7. I don\'t listen to much jazz, but I definitely prefer the microdetail of folk and primitive guitar records on the FH7. Traditional rock sounds good on both. If you are a fan of metal, I\'d choose FD5, though I think there are better headphones out there for metal overall.3. FD5 is a comfortable IEM, but FH7 feels more natural in my ears, due to their oceanic shape.4. Both IEMs are easy to drive. I have used mine with a variety of solid state amps on low gain settings (Schiit Magnius/Modius, Fiio K5, Fiio BTR3K, Ifi Micro Black Label). I would not recommend either on a tube amp (I have both a Darkvoice and a Feliks Echo).5. I\'ve played around with tips and different filters for each model of IEM and I\'ve never really thought the differences were substantial enough to have a definitive preference. You get plenty of tips for the right seal and comfort level.6. As with all Fiio product, the build quality, packaging, and accessories are first rate. They really pack a lot of features and value into your purchase. From an industrial design standpoint, they are beautiful, high performance objects. If you have the budget to choose only one, I\'d say your music choices should drive the decision. My choice would be the FD5 between the two only because it is more forgiving of a lot of my music\'s inherent qualities (though of course you can EQ the FH7). At the price the FD5 is a great sounding IEM, very high value for the money. If you are crazy enough to own both, I can say I don\'t shop for IEMs anymore, I\'m happy with the two alone.
- Bought the FD5 to replace another pair of high-end earbuds (Hidiz MS4)(1DD + 3BA) which malfunctioned twice within a 6-month span and only lasted a total of 1.5 years! It’s been a few weeks since receiving the FD5s and already I can tell these are far superior to my previous pair in so many ways! Below I have listed some of the most significant advantages:1. Superior Sound Quality - Fresh out of the box it already sounds better than my MS4s and will likely improve a bit with time. It’s impressive how a single, diamond like carbon, DD outcompetes earbuds with extensive BA combinations!I really like how fiio implemented natural acoustic filtering components to improve sound quality! The use of only a single DD simplifies the design lowering the likelihood of malfunctions!I listen to an array of music genres as well as audiobooks and everything sounds great!2. Superior Build - the FD5s utilize a solid stainless steel chassis, which is heavier, but will stand the test of time better and is appealing to the eye.The MS4s, as well as many other brands, generally utilize aluminum alloy chassis which are lighter but not nearly as tough.Another problem I had with the MS4s is the red & blue coating rubbed off very rapidly affecting their aesthetic appeal. This shouldn’t be an issue with the FD5s!The perforated back really takes the pressure off your eardrums, particularly at higher volumes!3. Superior Size/Fit - Although the FD5s are (1.4x) heavier than the MS4s overall I don’t notice any significant discomfort due to the weight. The considerably smaller size of the FD5s however does make a difference since I find they stay in my ear more comfortably and are less obnoxious over time! The interchangeable ear channels included also makes them much easier for users to tailor the fit. When used with the tri-flanges noise is blocked exceptionally well! I imagine it’s perfect for airplanes4. Far Superior (8-Strand) Cable - The FD5s come standard with the best quality cable available and includes the awesome unique ability to change input jack size; Fiio made this process easy and seamless!Basically like having (3) separate cables which would cost ($180) total otherwise!MMCX connectors are also far superior to (0.78mm) pins which I learned become brittle over time and break easily. Thus far I’ve identified only 3 very minor issues:1. When replacing earbud channels a very small area within the earbud, below the threads, looks choppy as if cut a bit sloppily. This doesn’t appear to affect performance at all!2. The right MMCX connector fits together significantly tighter than the left side. Once again this doesn’t appear to affect performance whatsoever though!3. When using the small ear channels many of the ear bud tips fit to loosely and come right off. Almost got one stuck in my ear this way so be careful! The tri-tips, vocal and maybe balanced tips fit the small channels while the rest do not.
