HIFIMAN HE-R9 Dynamic Closed-Back Over-Ear Headphones with Topology Diaphragm, Wired/Wireless, W/WO Bluemini R2R (Wired)
- Being a big fan of Hifiman planar headphones I had mixed expectations for the HE-R9. Hifiman has consistently impressed me with their lineup. I own the HE-500, HE5XX, Sundara, and Arya, and in the past I\'ve owned the HE-5, HE-5se, and HE-560, so I have a pretty broad understanding of their lineup; I\'ve never owned any of their dynamic headphones, however. This headphone is very unlike anything I\'ve heard from them, and I have mixed feelings about them, but I think they largely hit the mark.Far and away the most impressive thing about these is the bass. It\'s absolutely unparalleled in this price point, and in fact I\'m not sure I\'ve ever heard better bass. Maybe the Abyss AB-1266? This bass is absolutely thunderous, going extremely low at full power, while being entirely under control. It\'s fast, it\'s detailed, and there\'s not one iota of looseness to speak of. If you buy the headphone this is why you buy it; there\'s nothing else like it, and virtually every other headphone you ever hear will fail to live up. The one downside to the boosted bass is it bleeds into the low mids a fair bit. It\'s not always obvious, and only with certain voices will you hear it, but it is worth mentioning as it can make some voices sound overly lush. From the mids on up they\'re a little all over the place. There\'s peaks and dips throughout their frequency response, and it can give them a little bit of an unpolished sound. To my ear, none of the peaks or dips are too egregious, but the whole of the sound seems somewhat inconsistent. In fairness, though, these are not billed as a reference sound, so I feel you can write some of its issues off as character. Anybody looking for a more reference sound should look into something like the Beyerdynamic DT1770; it has a similar overall sound signature, but is generally more balanced, although you lose some of the stellar bass these have.My biggest complaint with the headphone is the lack of isolation. To say this is a closed headphone is being a little generous. \"Technically\" it is closed back, but they provide no isolation to outside noise, and I think some frequencies might even be louder with the headphones on.Overall I think this is a very good headphone, it\'s just narrowly crafted; it is not an \"every-headphone\", and I would not recommend it to be someone\'s sole headphone. If you have one or two other headphones that are more balanced, this might have a place in your collection.
- I’m a big Hifiman fan, and have been looking for a closed back pair to go along with the Sundara, but I gotta say, these were a disappointment. They sound very hollow, and muddy and lack the kind of clarity and dynamics I like with the Sundara and even the 4XX. While the bass improvement is nice compared to an open-back, it’s at the cost of everything else. It feels really imbalanced that way. I feel like I wasted my money, because there are cheaper pairs that sound as good, if not better.
- I grabbed a pair of these HiFiMan closed back dynamic headphones when I saw the sale/new lower price out of curiosity. I have a number of HiFiMan planar headphones, which I love, and wanted to see if they can do a dynamic headphone just as well. I was a little hesitant of getting these headphones since they look a bit odd with the large slanted red cups, but after receiving them and seeing them in person, they are really not much bigger in size than my other headphones, and extremely light weight. And now for the sound...in short, I was absolutely floored! I have no idea what kind of voodoo did to design and tune these cans, but I has the largest and richest sound of headphones that cost 10x more. I have no idea how they got such a huge soundstage from a pair of closed back headphones - it\'s like full 360 and many feet out. The mid vocals are flawless and a little forward, bass is crazy ample and goes deep into sub Base...and is clear and clean, and treble is just perfect. The detail and imaging are really impressive too - super great instrument separation. So, yes, HiFiMan can do dymanic headphones too...I have to say I like the sound of these a bit better than my Sundaras and Andandas...I never thought that was possible. Try a pair, you won\'t regret it.
- Now this is one incredible pair of headphones! The bass is massive and thunderous yet can reproduce the lowest bass rumbles that many of my other headphones just can\'t do, all while being powered by just about any amp. It is more impactful than my Beyerdynamic dt 880 600 ohm on a 50 watt amp, sometimes frighteningly so. That impactful punch is like a wild ride on a rollercoaster in that you have to be ready for it or it can be fatiguing. These are definitely not for all day listening like the HD650, dt 880, or sivga phoenix, but the sound signature is similar in that its a dark sounding smooth sound. I say dark sounding but the treble is still very clear and sparkling with detail. The midrange is a little forward and vocals are impressive. If you are not interested in a bass forward headphone or powerful bass is offensive then you are not going to like them. The R9 is for pure fun and music enjoyment rather than a neutral revealing balanced headphone, and it\'s that rush of fun that keeps me grabbing them time after time.
