Altec Lansing M604 Powered Audio System for Zune
- I purchased the Altec Lansing M604 solely because we had an 8 GB Zune and it was the only Zune specific system I could find. I needed it to be small as this was to go on a faux shelf in a smaller room. I had low expectations because of the price but I am familiar with other Altec Lansing products and have been satisfied. When it arrived it could not have been easier to set up. Plug it in, pop on the Zune and start her up. The controls are easy to use and the micro remote works well with the Zune player although it takes a little getting used to.It\'s location is high up on a shelf so I cannot actually see the controls at the top of the machine. They are in convenient locations and after a few tries I could work them by touch quite easily and with few mistakes. There is a visual feedback in the form of temporary leds that indicate when you are increasing volume, treble or bass.I was surprised with the level of control and the deep rich sound from the bass and the clarity of the midrange and treble. It produces great sound and would easily work in a room twice as large as the one in which I have it.The room has very challenging acoustics with lots of glass and tile, Hardwood floor, high ceiling with a 30 degree pitch at the top, porcelain etc. (Yes, you guessed right it is my wife\'s sanctuary, the master bath). In the past I have tried to put in portable CD players and a wall mounted thing from a major yuppie-goods retailer and they all sounded terrible. I am very pleased to say this A.L. Zune player sounds great, is unobtrusive and easy to work with for good ambient sound. I could probably do better but I would have to spend a whole lot more and it would be a great deal harder to set up and run.The one thing I did not like is there was no system to better support the thin 8 GB Zune. It feels a little floppy in its location and since I am reaching up to put it on the electronic post I have to feel it into location. It is easy to adjust to, but it would be nice if it felt more solid.I would (and might) buy this product again. I would recommend it to a friend.
- When this unit arrived, I was horribly disappointed to realize that it was not a truly portable unit; it cannot run on batteries. I guess I just assumed it was, since the im414 is. I got a great price on it, so I was all set to sell it on Ebay for a slight profit. Then I turned it on. I can\'t believe the sound! There\'s no way I would sell it now at twice the price! The m604 is my new best friend.I\'ll just add, because I\'ve seen some confusion about this, that it does work perfectly with my Zune 80. All you have to do is pop out the plastic insert in the stand.Edited a year later to note that the Kicker 500 blows this system out of the water. I just THOUGHT I was hearing good sound. The Kicker is about the same size, and is less expensive, but has a much, MUCH better sound. Kicker ZK500 Zune Speaker Dock (Black) And as an aside, the Kicker works better without the annoying little plastic inserts too.
- I own a Zune 30 (v1) and a Zune 8 (v2 flash device) devices. Both fit in this dock. (Note: Zune 80 (v2 hard drive player) does not fit in this dock, Altec Lansing has a different dock for Zune 80).So if you\'re looking for a good bargain and only want to support Zune 30 and Zune 8/Zune 4 devices, this is a great doc that won\'t break the bank. It has a TV out which can be used with your Zune 30 (though I haven\'t used it that way). The remote control only controls volume, previous/next song, stop and play. It doesn\'t control the Zune Device itself to browse through songs/playlists/albums/artists etc. That is the only reason I took away one star. You can also keep the Zune in this dock and wirelessly sync any music from your desktop to your Zune. This is great because sometimes I purchase music or subscribe to podcasts and don\'t happent to have the device with me at the computer (kids have it). The music/podcasts just appear on the device when its docked.
- After being rather disappointed with the other Zune accessories offered by Microsoft (especially the terrible FM transmitter), I was a little hesitant about buying anything else for my Zune. But I have to say I am very glad I ended up with the Altec Lansing M604. The sound is fantastic out of these unassuming speakers. The Zune hooks up nicely to the front cradle, but I have to admit sticking it on there somewhat blindly made me nervous. The remote is a great addition as well. Upon receiving this set-up, I was a little confused as to why people are complaining that you cannot navigate the Zune menus using the remote. If you were using the remote, I\'d assume that you are far away from the player-- so if you COULD navigate the menus, how would you see what you are doing? Seems kind of pointless to me. If you are going to be that close to be able to read what you are doing, you may as well extend your arm and use the Zune\'s navigation buttons. The one thing that would improve the product is a battery pack of some kind, so you could use the speakers without having to plug them in.Overall this is a fantastic accessory for any Zune user.
- Uh huh. I leave my Zune shuffling on the m604 dock all night with the sound off and it keeps the screen lit, changing from image to image. Could there be a cooler night light? But I digress...This unit has wonderful sound. I could believe that the musicians are in the next room sometimes. At VERY high volumes I get a little buzz, but if you just want full gorgeous sound for one room of your house, this is the way to go. It charges the Zune and has a handy remote, and looks elegant. If you\'re trying to decide between this and the im414, there\'s no contest. I\'ve listened to both, and the sound of the im414 can\'t even begin to compare with the sound of the m604. I was disappointed that the m604 doesn\'t work on batteries, but it\'s a little big to carry around with you anyway. (If you\'re looking for a great portable unit for your Zune, check out the JBL OnTour - no dock but it\'s small and sounds great). I use the m604 with my red Zune 80 - yes, it does fit; you just have to remove the little plastic insert.
