Sony Premium Noise Cancelling Wireless Behind-Neck in Ear Headphones - Gold (WI1000X/N)
- Updated March 8, 2018 - New info at the bottom of this posting.Okay, these are the best ANC/BT earbuds I have tried. My previous set of ANC earbuds were the Bose QuietComfort 20 which are NOT Bluetooth, but are pretty good earbuds all around. The problems with the Bose earbuds are: 1.) The cords, obviously! So ANNOYING! 2.) At low volume, the sound becomes very distorted and washed out. 3.) The bass is strong, but somewhat muddy. 4.) The overall sound is decent, but not great. 5.) The battery always seems to be dead. So, welcome the Sony 1000x (Gold) behind the neck earbuds. In the interim I have tried a host of other contenders, but when the price on these dropped I thought they were worth a try. So, the good: 1.) Nice build quality. 2.) Really crisp, clear, distinct and authentic sound - the best in any earbuds I have tried. And unlike the Bose QC 20\'s, even when you turn the volume down to a very low level, the sound is crisp and clear without distortion or undue noise cancelling hush. 3.) The bass is very crisp with Sony\'s \"Clear Bass\" and can be tweaked to suit your personal preference. 4.) You can download the \"Sony Headphones Connect\" app to really tweak the performance and choose multiple options relative to ANC, sound, bass, etc.. 5.) Very comfortable. 6.) Good connectivity. So now for the things that keep these from being perfect: 1.) The ANC is not as good at the Bose QuietComfort 20\'s, and certainly not as good as a pair of good ANC cans, like Bose or the Sony MDR\'s. The ANC can be tweaked in various ways with the Sony app, and it\'s not like it\'s bad. My recommendation is to jettison the provided earbud tips and put on the Comply Foam Premium Tips - Isolation T-400\'s. 2.) I wish the bud wires retracted like on the LG behind the neck models. Instead you sort of have to fold them into a crease if you don\'t want them just dangling. 3.) As others have noted, the controls are disappointing. You have to press so hard to get them to respond. Contrast that to the Phiaton BT 150 NC\'s which have a very nice \"swipe control\" feature, which actually works really well. The problem with Phiaton\'s were poor ANC and poor sound quality, but the swipe was super nice. So, with the Sony\'s I really end up controlling all the functions from my phone and not from the headset. This is a big annoyance. 4.) The battery takes a whopping 3.5 hours to charge, and while they promise 10 hours of continuous playback time with ANC on, I don\'t think I\'m getting that kind results. The battery always seems to be dead at the most inopportune times, and it takes forever for it to recharge. I\'d really like to see a \"fast-charging\" option. So, in terms of ANC/BT earbuds, these are the best I have found. They have super sound quality, are very comfortable, and have reasonable ANC. According to other reviews I have seen, it seems they beat the Bose ANC/BT earbuds in three categories: 1.) Price. 2.) ANC 3.) Sound quality. Maybe the future will provide the perfect ANC/BT earbud, but for today, the Sony\'s are as good as it gets.UPDATE - March 8, 2018 - So this past week there was a price war on refurbished Sony WH-1000XM2/N Wireless Bluetooth Noise Cancelling Hi-Fi Headphones, These are the competition to the top of the line Bose QC 35\'s, and many reviewers consider them to be not only better, but the BEST. I bought them from Amazon, but actually Ebay had them at them at $199 - a steal. I expected these Sony NC/BT cans to be far and away above the Sony buds I had originally purchased, but here\'s the truth, try as I might, I could not get the Sony cans to sound better. I tweaked and adjusted, but in the end, the Sony buds produced better bass, better clarity overall, and more natural noise cancelling. Tonight I returned the WH -1000XM2/N\'s, and as a result, I changed my previous 4 star rating of these buds to a solid 5! I would highly recommend them!
- This product is a strong competitor to Bose QC30, same MRPrice but a one dynamic - one balanced armature hybrid units. The noise cancelling effort at least not less than QC30, but in silent night environment, you can hear the ground noise annoying for sleep, same problem for QC30 and other in-ear NC headphones because their drivers are far more closer to ear than over-ear NCs.First for the shortcoming when it debut in Sept 16 2017, this headphone can only pairing to one bluetooth device at one time for now. I own QC30 for a half year, QC30 supports multi-point Bluetooth pairing. Suppose a situation you are streaming music from your MP3 Player, and your phone is also paired with the headphone standby, when a call coming the call can automatically patch through the headphone. Now WI-1000x can only pairing to one device, if you want to switch to another audio source, you need to disconnect first then choose another. I don\'t know why a manufacturer producing both MP3 Player and cellphone could miss multi-pairing feature, and I\'m looking forward to a firmware update. For opponent weaknesses, QC30 couldn\'t connect to airline infotainment system, so Sony add airplane adapter wire plug; Rubbery material of QC30 is easy to stain by makeup and sweat, so WI1000x is made by hard plastics and artificial leather; QC30 only have standard bluetooth codec (SBC) with poor signal transmission strength, so WI-1000X supported all bluetooth audio transmission formats like LDAC and aptX HD to avoid audio skipping.Four SS, S M L normal silicone tips and three S M L comply tips included, wearing comfort and stability thought can\'t surpass Bose\'s ergonomic silicone tips, but still acceptable for a person with small ears, the big unit can stay comfortably in the concha. Total weight is heavier than other neckband headphones that you can feel the press on your neck. The protect pouch in the box is a soft clothing pouch, a hardside case would be better for travel protection. With mobile app Sony Headphone Connect, the app using accelerometer and other sensors to automatically switch NC profiles and optimize by detecting atmospheric pressure. You can adjust levels of noise cancellation in different profiles manually.
- I bought these to replace a set of wired Bose noise-cancelling earbuds that I used with my previous phone which still had a headphone jack.I like them; they are pretty comfortable to wear, and I tried a couple of the included squishy earpieces to find the one that fit best and was comfortable for long wear.I use them on airplane trips and nearly every day on my commute. They are great at blocking out airplane and road noise; less good at blocking out voices (as with all noise cancelling headphones). When I want to tune out I use them to play rain or ocean sounds.Nice:- pretty comfortable and a nice form factor.- Bluetooth works well with iPhone and Pixel phones.- noise cancellation works well.- with the Sony app you can fiddle with lots of settings.- battery is pretty long lasting.- can be used as plug-in headphones with noise cancelling if the battery isn’t dead.- works as a phone headset too although it is terrifying the first time it vibrates on phone ring. (You can turn that off.)Not as nice:- the headphones warn you when the battery is dead, but not when it is getting low, which would be nice to know.- not so good for running or working out as they will flop about; I got a second cheap set of wireless earbuds for that.I would buy them again.
