Bose Quietcontrol 30 Wireless Headphones, Noise Cancelling - Black
- First the warning. As of December 19, 2016 if you are using the Bose Connect App with these headphones you could be heading for trouble if the app pushes an automatic software update to these headphones. I have gone through two headsets that I purchased through Amazon where the update downloaded to the headphones. With the first headset it caused the green battery indicator to stay on constantly lit whether the headphones were on or shut down. This caused the battery to run down because of a constant on light. Amazon promptly replaced them. I received my replacement set. The software update downloaded to them and they totally stopped functioning at all. In addition the battery indicator light was on constant again. I contacted Bose and told the technician what I was experiencing. He researched and found that certain Bose Quiet Comfort 30 Headphones were not compatible with this software update. He told me to uninstall the app until a fix could be completed. So now I have a second set that doesn\'t function at all. Amazon is graciously replacing that headset too. I have already returned the first and second set. Since I removed the Bose App I am hoping to have no further problems with the 3rd replacement set when they arrive. The Bose Technician told me a notification would be sent to me when the update is corrected. With the app gone there will be no update. As I said before they were perfect before the update. Now on to the headphones themselves. They sound fantastic and they are very comfortable. The noise counseling circuitry works perfectly. You can dial up as much noise canceling as you need. And when you dial it higher you are isolated from the outside world. They are that good. If you are out jogging on a street you can dial the noise counseling down so you can more easily hear the surroundings around you. I can highly recommend them. They stay in your ears with no popping out. They sound great with calls too. The only thing (and it is minor) that I don\'t like is the little rubber cover that you have to peel back to insert the charging plug. It is a little cumbersome.I\'m sorry, the correct name for these headphones is Bose Quietcontrol 30 (not comfort) headphones.UPDATE: The third replacement set has been working fine for weeks now. The first two sets stopped working within two days. As I stated before with the first two sets I was using the Bose Connect App. Each set stopped working after the firmware update. One Bose technician told me there was a problem with the firmware update and not to use it. However in later emails a different Bose technician said the update would not affect the power indicators. So your guess is as good as mine. But with this third set I have not used the app with the headphones and they are working fine. Now on to another theory. Since the second tech guy said the firmware update would not have caused my problem the only other thing I can think of would be sweat. Not with the headphones themselves but the power switch in the neckband. The switch sits face down on your neck allowing it to get wet if you sweat. It makes me wonder if the switch is not completely sealed allowing moisture to get in and short the switch out. The power switch and indicators were the problem with the first two sets. To be safe I carefully placed a clear piece of packing tape (a small strip) over the switch and indicator lights to keep any moisture out. Like I said this third set has been working perfectly for going on three weeks now. Now I am not sure if it was the firmware update or moisture that caused the problem. If you read different reviews, some say they are totally sweat resistant and some say they are not. When I mentioned this to the second Bose technician he could not give a definitive answer on the moisture issue. He did say they made sport headphones however. So in closing I am not sure which issue caused my problem with the first two sets. But I\'m afraid to use the connect app again. And I also covered the switch. They are working and sound great. It would be interesting to know if anyone else has experienced the problem I had with the first two sets as explained in my initial review. These headphones are phenomenal at blocking noise and they sound great. They could have been designed better. I do not like the function of the power switch at all. It is cumbersome to use when you have the band on your neck. I also don\'t like the charging port cover. It too is cumbersome to use. But the fact that you can adjust the level of noice cancellation plus the good sound, makes up for some of the awkwardness.FINAL UPDATEI have been using these headphones for months now and my final analysis is as follows:First: The third replacement set has been working fine even with the Bose App updates.Second: They do sound phenomenal and the noise canceling is the best I have experienced. I don\'t know how Bose does it but they do it right. The ear pieces are very comfortable too.But even though the sound, noise canceling and ear pieces are great, there is a lot I don\'t like about them.Third: This unit has the most awkward power switch I have ever used. It is poorly designed, hard to push and placed underneath the rubber neck piece where it is hard to get to when you have to turn them on or off. I actually hate it. You push once to turn on and push again to turn off. All indicator lights go out after it is paired making it hard to determine if they are on or off. You have to listen to the tones in the ear pieces to determine if on or off. That is fine but if you have them off, the ear pieces are not in your ears to hear the tone. You can eventually figure it out but it should be much easier to visually tell. A slide switch with off and on would fix that. You have to experience it to totally understand. Plus I question if sweat can seep in through the switch and short it out. Remember the switch actually rests against your neck. I don\'t know if it can but I placed a small piece of clear tape over the switch to make sure sweat can\'t enter. Read my above review.Fourth: Again the rubber cover over the charging port is cheap and awkward to use for a $300.00 set.Fifth: Although the neck piece seems nice it does slide around on your neck. Not a major big deal but it needs a redesign or some way to adjust them.Sixth: While the volume up and down plus track controls work fine, the noise cancellation adjustment incorporated in the same control make the whole control awkward to use because you have to feel for the correct controls to use. Also it can be hard to tell if you are increasing or reducing noise cancellation.Seventh: There needs to be small magnets to hold the left and right ear pieces together when not in your ears. Extremely awkward having them dangling around when you have to temporarily take them out of your ears.Eighth: There is no style to these headphones. For $300.00 you should get a set that has some looks to it. It is basically a black piece of rubber. Now all that being said they are a set of headphones that sound great but need a redesign in my opinion. I also have no problem using the microphone with calls as some folks have said. I have a feeling there next version will be greatly improved. And they really need to do it. For some reason the Amazon App will not let me change my rating so I will say it here:Sound and noise cancellation - 5 starDesign and functionality - 3 starFINAL FINAL UPDATEI am convinced that these headphones allow sweat/moisture to enter the power switch causing it to short out. I have read many reviews of the headphones going dead or shorting out as people were exercising. It happened to me with two sets. Cutting a small piece of clear mail packing tape and covering the entire switch area will eliminate this problem. I haven\'t had this problem since I covered the switch. These headphones need a total redesign. They constantly turn on your neck. The earbuds dangle all over the place when you take them out of your ears. Magnets should have been installed to eliminate this. The switch is not that easy to operate. For $300.00 they are ugly with no style. The good things that I can say is they do sound great and the noise cancellation is very good but if I had it to do over again I would not buy them. Having to pay $300.00 for these headphones and having to put tape on them is ridiculous, that and the inconvenience of them. I also believe that the firmware updates mentioned in my initial review had nothing to do with the shorting out, it was sweat. You let sweat get in the switch and you are in for trouble.
- Unboxing and PackagingThe Bose QuietControl QC30 active noise canceling bluetooth headphones comes in the usual premium Bose packaging. The box folds open left and right revealing the headphones in a molded plastic tray. The headphones come with three sized ear tips, USB charging cable, and a largish semi hard plastic zip case. The zip case reminds me of my old Sony Discman. The lid part of the zip case has a elastic pocket that is perfect to store the charging cable.Build QualityRemember that this is a US $299 pair of headphones and I expect nothing but top build quality. The QC30 feels premium. The cable is round, thick and soft. It comes out of the neck band into the ear piece without any sign of possible areas for breakage. The neck band has a matte rubber finish that is pleasant to touch. The back part of the neck band is much thinner than the front and sides. It feels good riding on my neck directly. The cables are quiet short so there are not a lot of slack when wearing the headphones.ComfortThe StayHear+ QC ear tips, at least for me, are some of the most comfortable ear tips. There is absolutely no pressure in my ear canal, yet it provides a good seal so that the noise cancelation works extremely well. The neck band is light enough that I forgets it is there after a while.ControlsThe neckband has one button, recessed into the band material, on the right side. It is the power button, and also serves as the bluetooth control button. The button is small and somewhat difficult to click. There are two very small, almost pin hole like, color LEDs next to the button. One is for power/charging. The other one is for bluetooth status. The power LED shows green when on, and yellow then flashing red as the battery level decreases. During charging, the LED will flash amber, and go to solid green when fully charged. If you hold down the power button for a few seconds, it will enter bluetooth pairing mode, and the LED will blink white. Solid white means the headphones is paired to at least one source. The right hand side wire also has an inline control. The inline control provide volume up and down, and a center button for play/pause. On the side of the control there are two buttons for stepping the noise cancelation level up or down. I counted 12 steps of control. I wish there is a key press that will immediately take the noise cancelation down to zero. This is available on the Bose QC20i wired noise cancelation headphones.BluetoothThe bluetooth implementation is one of the best feature of all newer Bose bluetooth headphones, including the soundSport Wireless. The QC30 will stay connected to two devices at the same time. When one of them output audio, the QC30 will switch to that device. I normally have the QC30 paired to both my Macbook Pro and my iPhone7 at the same time. The impressive feature is that the QC30 actually stores pairing information on up to eight different devices. If the last top two devices are not available, it will go down the list until it finds devices that are available. This means that I can have the QC30 connect automatically to my work laptop plus my iPhone 7 when I am in the office, then automatically switch to my home laptop plus the same iPhone when I get home.If the QC30 takes too long in looking for a device, you can press the power button with 3 seconds of powering on to force it to go to the next device. At home, the bluetooth connection holds for about 20 feet in my semi-open house. In the office, the connection holds for over 40 feet in a open plan office. I would expect more interference in the office but that is not the case.Battery LifeThe QuietControl QC30 took just under 2 hours to be fully charged. The battery ran out after one day of hard use, with about 3 hours of conference call and music listening inbetween. I estimated the battery life is around the claimed 6 hours total.Sound QualityA lot of people, myself included, use to think a bit less of the Bose sound signature. However I find that the QC30 sounds good. With Eric’s Song by Vienna Tang, her calm detailed vocals shine through clearly. On Exit Music (For a Film) by Radiohead, the deep vocals is clear without being over bearing. Yorke’s voice is haunting and you can hear all the details over the simple guitar.Sting’s A Thousand Years is my go to track for testing out deep electronic base at the beginning of the track. The QC30 performs well for a pair of earbuds style headphones. Listening to Viva La Vida by Coldplay, where Chris Martin add layers upon layers of tracks as the song build up, each instrument tracks can be heard clearly. Sound stage is wide. The sound stage is even better when playing Happy Theme Song by Grace Kelly. Her sax is punchy and warm up front as the rest of her ensemble plays in the back around her. Finally, a fun track to listen to is Black Horse and the Cherry Tree by KT Tunstall. It’s simply enjoyable through the QC30.Not to forget, the active noise cancelation works extremely well both in a simulated test environment, playing white/brown/pink noise in the background, as well as in my office. The QC30, just like the QC20, completely cuts out ambient noise from the AC and other lower frequency hums. The ear tips have enough passive isolation that I can barely hear regular volume talking 10 feet away. The one area that the QC30 seems to fall down is the microphone quality. I assume that it is using the noise canceling mics on both ear piece to capture sound. On my conference calls, the receiver on the other end tells me the audio is just ok, and is definitely assuming I am using so sort of bad mic.ConclusionSince I bought and used the Bose SoundSports wireless as my primary running and around the house headphone, I have been waiting for the QC30 to come out. The QC20i (wired noise canceling version) has been my travel headphones for a while so I know the noise cancelation is going to be as good on the QC30. Together with the great bluetooth implementation, the QC30 is now my main headphones for everything — office, gym. I only switch to my high end setup when I am sitting down for a true music session. The convenience and the comfort of the QC30 simply is a winning combination for everyday use.
