- Honestly, I can\'t believe they still sell this model. I bought this in 10th grade and was blown away by its performance then. The technology has improved so much since then that I can\'t imagine spending this much on this model today. It worked great at the time, and I ended up giving it away to one of my friends. The grill got scuffed over time and it got bent by something. I generally take good care of things, so I don\'t know how it happened.
- This is a buyer beware notice. I have had the big Jambox for a couple of years. About a year ago when I tried to charge it, the dc plug started jiggling around and the Jambox would not take a charge. I decided to troubleshoot it after I replaced it with another brand bluetooth speaker. When I opened it up to troubleshoot it, I saw the DC Jack had broken away from the printed circuit board and was loose inside the Jambox. When it detached from the PCB, it lifted the solder pads and so I could not re-solder the part on again. There are no replacement boards 70-00007-C available for purchase from Jambox and so the entire speaker was useless. It couldn’t take a charge or power up so I tossed it. I was surprised to see other forum comments of people who had exactly the same DC Jack break-away from the board it was supposed to be soldered to. It had good sound quality while it lasted, but it didn’t last long enough for the price I paid. I’m throwing away over 200 dollars by trashing it today.
- I recently compared the Roar 2, Soundlink III, Soundlink Mini II, Sonos Play 1, Amazon Echo, Sony Srx55 and the Big Jambox side by side in my home.Out of all the units the Big Jambox was one of the least offensive. Each of the units above had something good and bad enough to return. At the moment, the Big Jambox\'s only real dig is that the bass doesn\'t hit as low as the Bose units. But Bose bass is flubby room filling sound. The Jambox has the best clarity and highs (like the Sony & less extent Roar 2) that the Bose units don\'t have, so when listening to lower volumes the clarity is much appreciated when watching shows. Also the bluetooth doesn\'t cause video delays in Netflix streaming from an iPad. This is a huge problem on the Sony unit and a minor problem on the Echo unit.Overall, if it wasn\'t for the bluetooth video delay of the Sony unit, it\'d be #1 in the group, but this is a huge defect if you watch video, but NOT a defect is just using the unit for music. The Jambox is the overall #1. It doesn\'t do anything bad for what it is, other than want more bass. Volume gets loud enough and the mids, lows, highs ramp up evenly as you turn the dial up.The Soundlink III is an alternative of you want more room filling bass. It\'s not quality bass, just flubby bass equalized to sound big. The mids and highs sound veiled, but acceptable enough. At low volumes, it still is a room filler and the mids are intelligible enough. It\'s $120 more than the Jambox so that is a huge negative on it.The Sonos Play 1 is the best compromise with the best tighter bass, and better highs/mids than the Soundlink, but not as crisp up top like the Jambox, Sony, Roar2 in that order. Honestly, this is the #1 unit but disqualified since it doesn\'t carry bluetooth--a big need for me.The Amazon Echo has really good mids relative to the competition and just enough bass and loudness. A good, inooffensive unique product that may be #1 on your list if you love it\'s side voice features. It isn\'t portable for the beach since it carries no battery. And videos carry a smidge of lag in voices with bluetooth but totally forgiveable and unnoticeable for all but the most critical. The Roar 2 has more features like SDcard input for your music and recorder and the sound is clear and even, but the bass from the passive radiators sound like crap if you play with an equalizer too much...much more than the other units. The unit is ugly and when placed in the more appropriate vertical position versus its belly, the power cord shows a lot. It wasn\'t a standout in any dept. like the other products, except for features that you may care about like the SDcard input, etcIMHO, all these units are compromised in a way.Just keep in mind that their size and sound quality disallows them from being anything more than a background sound toy for the beach or patio. These aren\'t replacements for a larger/more proper sounding \"boom box\" (like the top-rated Brookstone Big Blue Party, Fluance Fi50, Klipsch KMC3) or a home sound system. Their one-handed portability is their value propositionNext up, I\'m ordering a Marshall Acton, Damson Vulcan, and Wren Airplay units to compare. These units are bigger so they should also sound bigger. The Damson is smaller/portable and could be a great contender based on Youtube reviews and UK Amazon ratings from users. The Denon Envaya(slightly better than Bose/less expensive), JBL Charge 2 with updated firmware 1.41, Harmon Kardon Onyx Studio(big), and Riva Turbo(expensive) units also get overall raves and may be worth a look....but honestly, I\'ve already tested some of the best on the market, so I\'m sure it\'ll be more of the same and not be wowed by any of them.
- My brother owned the smaller original Jambox. I was blown away when I heard it, and for a long time I wanted to get my own. After reading so many rave reviews about the Big Jambox online, I decided I definitely wanted to get one. I had very high expectations based on what I read, and honestly the Big Jambox delivered on every front. In this case the overwhelming numbers of great Amazon reviews were correct. I got a red one, and I really love it.As a professional saxophonist and private music instructor I use play along CDs and MP3s both for myself and my students for studying jazz. I was a bit skeptical before it got as to whether or not it would be loud enough for us to play along to, but once I got it and tried it my fears melted away – it was MORE than loud enough and the sound quality was excellent! Honestly this unit packs a real wallop for its size and I am very pleased with the volume level.I know there are a lot of comparisons between the Big Jambox and the Bose Soundlink, and having never owned or heard in person the Bose unit I can’t comment on any difference there may be between the 2. But at the time of this review the Bose Soundlink is about $300 while the Big Jambox is at $187, so to me it would seem to be the better box-for-the-buck.The battery life is really great too. I am able to get over 10 hours of playtime with my Big Jambox before it needed a recharge. The frequency response of the Big Jambox seem very well balanced to my ear for a speaker this size. The bass has a nice punch while not being overwhelming loud, it’s just about where it should be. The mids and highs are very good, although I would have liked the highs to be a bit crisper, but this is really a minor issue. It really fills a room nicely, but it also sounds great outdoors as it did on a recent camping trip I took. I enjoy listening to jazz, classic rock, and classical music mostly, and these 3 very different styles all sound marvelous on my Big Jambox. The Big Jambox has a feature called Live Audio, and I admit I have somewhat mixed feelings on it.On the plus side, the Live Audio feature does something amazing – if you close your eyes and put the Big Jambox in front of you with Live Audio engaged, you would swear that the sound is coming from areas several feet from the right and left of the speaker where there no part of the actual Big Jambox exists! This is really amazing and it gives the Big Jambox the illusion of having stereo separation far beyond it’s actual physical bounds. However, on the minus side, Live Audio seems to bury some frequencies more than others, most notably to my ear lead vocals tend to get somewhat covered up by the band, which is not the case when Live Audio is off. Also the overall volume is lower when Live Audio is activated, so you lose some of that punch you get when using the Big Jambox without it.Overall I would highly recommend the Big Jambox for anyone who is looking for a very powerful, portable bluetooth speaker system with excellent sound quality at a very reasonable price point for any room in your home, or outdoors on your back patio or at your campsite, or for jamming along with if you are a musician like me. It delivers on all accounts and I’m certain if you get one you will be very satisfied with it.
